We’re encouraging all our attendees to bring their own reusable coffee mug or water bottle to the event— we won’t be offering cups at water stations at the show. Don’t try to hold water in your hands—bring your water bottle to Greenbuild and help us reduce our impact on the environment at Greenbuild and beyond.
The Kariba REDD+ Project, launched in 2011, has protected close to 785,000 hectares of Zimbabwe land from deforestation and land degradation. This act of land preservation has resulted in the prevention of more than 18 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions from being released into the atmosphere. The Kariba Forest Protection project is the largest REDD+ project, connecting four national parks and eight safari reserves to protect an expansive forest that houses numerous endangered and vulnerable species like the African elephant, lion, hippo, southern ground hornbill, and lappet-faced vulture, among various others.
In the past, political and economic turmoil caused more than 1/3 of Zimbabwe forests to be lost from people clearing the land for subsistence farming and fuelwood. With the project, close to 85,000 people have benefited from project activities with training in improved agriculture, tree planting, fire management, ecotourism, and beekeeping, and 40% of participants are women finding roles in significant fields such as agriculture, education, and project management. Furthermore, the project has contributed to improved clinic amenities to provide access to better healthcare (19 clinics have been supported since 2011), new infrastructure with roads and boreholes to improve daily life (over 60,000 people have been provided with safe, clean water with borehole maintenance), and school subsidies offered to the poorest quartile of the local population to equip them with better education and opportunities.
With your small $15 carbon offset donation, the project can continue to support regional sustainable development and independence, as well as continuing to support the wellbeing of the local community.
Hosted in one of America's greenest cities, Greenbuild 2018 continued to set an industry standard for events - reaching an 86% waste diversion rate.
